Nebraska defensive end describes new defensive coordinator as a genius

Nebraska football defensive end Cam Lenhardt spoke highly of defensive coordinator Rob Aurich when he met with the media on Tuesday afternoon. Lenhardt is coming into the season as one of the veterans on this defense.

He joined the Huskers in 2023 and has maintained a steady role since. He has recorded 55 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks over the course of three seasons.

Last season, he recorded 23 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in addition to two sacks. The tackles were the most in his Nebraska career.

Rob Aurich joins Nebraska after spending last season with San Diego State. In his first season with the Aztecs, his defense finished fifth in scoring, allowing 12.6 points per game.

SDSU was also in the top ten for yards per game (266.7), yards per pass (5.1), rushing touchdowns allowed (5), and opponent completion percentage (53.3). Aurich’s hire brings about a philosophical shift for the defense, as he runs a 4-2-5.The Huskers have run a 3-3-5 scheme under Matt Rhule over the past three seasons. Lenhardt explains why he is excited to play on a revamped defense led by Aurich.

“For me, he’s like a mad scientist; he’s a genius. I like his energy level. Great person to be around, and I’m always asking him questions.”

Lenhardt will have to play a big role on this defense moving forward, as he has shown flashes of impact playmaking ability, particularly in his freshman season. His emergence and consistency will be needed on a defense with several new additions.

Nebraska opens the 2026 season on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Ohio Bobcats visit Memorial Stadium. Kickoff time is set for 11 a.m. CT and can be seen on FS1.
