Notre Dame Football Friday Free-For-All Mailbag

by

Another week of the 2026 offseason is coming to a close. This week, we discussed a host of topics here at Irish Breakdown. We started out with our weekly buy/sell/hold and our premium message board members brought the heat and came correct like they also do. We also talked through what makes a championship roster and if there’s one currently in South Bend. Then, we talked through the Top 10 rosters in college football.

Later in the week, we recapped Notre Dame’s practice they hand on Wednesday and thoughts on their portal class and why they continue to get no love. We also talked about what teams we’d like to see on their schedule on an annual basis between old rivals and potential new rivals. Once again, we’re ending this week in style with our Friday free-for-all mailbag and answered a host a great questions from our daily listens. You can watch all of that and more on today’s episode of the Irish Breakdown Podcast.

Here are some of the main questions we answered on today’s show:

On If We Have Any Early Upset Predictions This Year

“I actually have one. I have Auburn winning the Iron Bowl this year down in Tuscaloosa. We’re either going to look like geniuses or morons because we’re riding the Auburn hype train really hard. Neither of us think that this team is going to win a title this season, but we both think they’re going to be much improved.

“They had a ton of close losses last season that I don’t know will be the case this season. They weren’t far away from being a nine to ten win football team. They’ll have better coaching and better quarterback play this fall. Alabama has an undisciplined defense, or at least have had one over the last couple seasons. Byrum Brown could put up some Heisman-type of numbers against them.”

On What Position Group Generally Has The Deepest Rotation

“In more recent years, I’m actually going to go with the defensive line. With a longer playoff format and longer seasons, you’re seeing more and more teams go to a deeper rotation along their defensive lines. Take Notre Dame for example, the last two seasons, and most likely a third this year, they’ve rotated a lot of their defensive line. Some has been by necessity and some has been due to the overall depth of talent in the room.

“They’re far removed from the days where Trevor Laws, Victor Abiamiri, Chris Frome and Derek Landri had to play every defensive snap. This year, they have the potential to play four to five defensive ends and still have some very talented players left out of the rotation. Then at defensive tackle, they could go five to six players deep in the rotation and leave out some very talented players as well. It’s going to be very interesting to see their defensive line rotation. But along with wide receivers, I’d also say the defensive line.”
