One of college football’s biggest stars is Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Smith reached the pinnacle of college football in 2024, emerging as the centerpiece of Ohio State’s offense.
He almost single-handedly transformed the Buckeyes into an offensive juggernaut during the College Football Playoff.

Smith followed his standout freshman campaign with another excellent season as a sophomore. Now, he appears to be just a few big games away from becoming one of, if not the, greatest wide receivers in Ohio State history.
College football: Defensive points per game leaders through Week 9
According to Ohio State’s record book, Smith needs just 39 receptions, 341 receiving yards, and nine touchdown catches to break the school’s career records. If he stays healthy and the Buckeyes’ offense continues to thrive, he should shatter each of those marks.
History in the making
Smith is only entering his third season at Ohio State. If he declares for the 2027 NFL Draft, he will almost certainly be a top-five pick. Still, it’s fair to wonder whether Ohio State could put together an NIL package strong enough to convince him to return for his senior season.

If that happened, Smith could create even more separation atop the program’s record book. He could even turn his attention to the NCAA’s all-time receiving records, currently held by Corey Davis and Jarett Dillard.

One thing is certain: if Smith continues to dominate the way he has throughout his career, he will only strengthen his legacy. He would also add another chapter to Ohio State’s reputation as “WR U.”
Wide receivers to watch in 2026 college football
Smith would surpass school records currently held by Emeka Egbuka and Chris Olave, but those are only the latest names atop the record book. He has already joined, and, in some cases, surpassed, a long list of legendary Buckeye receivers.

Cris Carter, David Boston, Marvin Harrison Jr., and Santonio Holmes are just a few of the iconic names that highlight Ohio State’s rich tradition at the position.
The only question that remains is this: How many games will it take for Smith to shatter the Buckeyes’ receiving records?
