Real Madrid has strengthened its roster for the 2026-27 season by signing French swingman Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot to a two-year contract, the club announced on Friday. The move adds one of the EuroLeague’s most productive scorers to a team that reached the 2026 championship game and is entering a new era under head coach Pedro Martinez.
Luwawu-Cabarrot arrives after the finest season of his professional career with Baskonia. The 31-year-old averaged 18.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists across 36 EuroLeague games, finishing fourth in the competition in scoring while shooting an efficient 47.6% from the field, 41.2% from three-point range and 89.8% from the free-throw line.
His production carried over to Spain’s Liga ACB, where he led the league with 18.7 points per game while adding 3.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 32 appearances. He also posted outstanding shooting splits of 46.2% from the field, 39.3% from beyond the arc and 90.1% at the foul line as Baskonia advanced to the domestic playoffs.
The signing gives Real Madrid another proven perimeter scorer after the departure of Trey Lyles, who averaged a team-high 13.5 points in EuroLeague play last season before leaving the club. Madrid also parted ways with Alex Len, David Kramer and head coach Sergio Scariolo, while appointing Martinez and adding Spanish forward Jaime Pradilla earlier this offseason.
Luwawu-Cabarrot joins a roster led by Mario Hezonja, Facundo Campazzo and Edy Tavares. Hezonja averaged 13.3 points during Madrid’s run to the EuroLeague final, while Campazzo contributed 12.0 points and a team-best 5.1 assists per game. Tavares remained one of Europe’s premier interior forces, posting 9.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks while shooting 68.9% from the field.
The move closely resembles Real Madrid’s successful acquisition of Dzanan Musa several years ago, when the club signed the Spanish League’s leading scorer from Rio Breogan. Luwawu-Cabarrot arrives with even greater experience, having established himself across both the NBA and EuroLeague.
Before returning to Europe, the 2.01-meter wing appeared in 343 NBA games over six seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks. Selected 24th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft by Philadelphia, he also represented France internationally after beginning his professional career with Antibes and later spending a season with Mega Basket in Serbia.
His European development has been steady. After averaging 9.4 points with EA7 Emporio Armani Milan in 2022-23 and improving to 13.0 points with ASVEL in 2023-24, Luwawu-Cabarrot broke out during his two seasons with Baskonia, culminating in his elite 2025-26 campaign. Despite now entering his fifth EuroLeague season, he has yet to appear in a EuroLeague playoff game, as each of his previous clubs fell short of advancing beyond the regular season.
Real Madrid finished third in the 2025-26 EuroLeague regular season with a 24-14 record before defeating Hapoel Tel Aviv 3-1 in the quarterfinals. The club then beat Valencia 105-90 in the Final Four semifinal before falling 92-85 to Olympiacos in the championship game.
