The Philadelphia 76ers entered the 2026 offseason as a fringe playoff team but reshaped their roster into a championship contender, according to rival executives who believe the team’s talent level gives it a legitimate path to a title despite concerns about fit, depth and player roles.
The addition of LeBron James alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe created one of the NBA’s most star-heavy rosters. Executives around the league told Howard Beck of The Ringer that Philadelphia has enough elite talent to be considered a contender, while questioning whether the team can balance the offensive demands of multiple high-usage players.
“Good luck,” one rival executive said. “They do not have any role players on their team now. All those guys want and need the ball. I’m not sure any will want to sacrifice.”
Another executive added that someone would need to make a sacrifice for the roster to succeed. “Somebody will have to check their ego at the door, and I don’t see Joel or Bron being the ones to do it,” the executive said.
Philadelphia’s talent foundation is built around players who already carried major offensive responsibilities. Maxey averaged 28.3 points and 6.6 assists in 70 games during the 2025-26 season while shooting 46.2% from the field and 36.7% from three-point range.
Embiid averaged 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 38 games, shooting 48.9% from the field and 85.4% from the free-throw line. His availability remains a major factor after missing significant time, but his production when healthy remains at an All-NBA level.
Brown gives Philadelphia another proven scoring option after the 76ers acquired him from Boston in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks. The move created a new superstar pairing next to Embiid while changing the team’s offensive hierarchy.
Edgecombe provides another young piece after averaging 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 75 games as a rookie. The 20-year-old guard also shot 35.4% from three-point range and started every game he played during the season.
The 76ers finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 45-37 record and entered the playoffs as the Eastern Conference’s No. 7 seed. They advanced past Boston in a seven-game first-round series before being swept by the eventual Eastern Conference champion New York Knicks in the conference semifinals.
Philadelphia’s offseason moves changed the outlook of the roster. The team added defensive-minded forward Dean Wade, bench scorer Anfernee Simons and additional depth after moving several rotation players, including George, Quentin Grimes, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Andre Drummond.
