Former Bath captain Roger Spurrell has died at the age of 71.

The flanker and former paratrooper made his debut for the club in 1979 and took over as captain in 1982.

He led Bath for three seasons as they won back-to-back John Player Cups, beating rivals Bristol in 1984 and London Welsh in 1985, before leaving the club in 1986.

Spurrell is one of just six players to be inducted into Bath’s Hall of Fame, alongside Jeremy Guscott, Jack Rowell, John Hall, Frank Soane and Major Ronald Anderson Gerrard.

He also played county rugby for Cornwall and had spells at Plymouth Albion and Launceston.

“Roger was instrumental in turning Bath into a winning side with grit, and his contribution was recognised when he became one of the club’s inaugural Hall of Fame inductees in 2015, alongside the likes of Jack Rowell OBE and Jeremy Guscott,” Bath said.

“While his achievements on the field were considerable, Roger’s greatest legacy was the example he set.

“He was tough, committed and utterly dedicated to the team. The values he championed remain woven into the fabric of Bath Rugby today.”
