The battle for the final podium spot in the FIBA World Ranking has become one of international basketball’s closest races after the latest update released on Monday. While the United States and Germany remain firmly in first and second place, Serbia, France and Canada are now separated by fewer than 1.5 ranking points following Window 3 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Qualifiers.
All five of the world’s highest-ranked teams strengthened their positions by finishing Window 3 with perfect records. With another qualifying window scheduled for August, however, the race behind the United States and Germany remains wide open.
Serbia currently holds third place, but its margin over fourth-placed France and fifth-placed Canada is minimal. The slim gap means even a slight difference in results during Window 4 could reshuffle the top five and potentially change the composition of the podium before the World Cup qualifying campaign continues.
Further down the rankings, Spain climbed into sixth place by overtaking Australia despite both teams continuing to perform well in qualifying. The movement was influenced by FIBA’s ranking formula, which applies a higher Region Factor to games played in the European Qualifiers than to those contested in the Asian Qualifiers. The weighting reflects the historical strength of competition across FIBA regions.
Brazil produced one of the most significant moves inside the top 10. After improving to 6-0 in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers with two convincing road victories during Window 3, Brazil climbed to ninth place, moving ahead of Lithuania.
The rise is historically significant for the South American powerhouse. Brazil had not been ranked inside the world’s top 10 since the December 31, 2016 update, when it occupied seventh place.
Latvia also gained ground among Europe’s elite, moving back into 12th place after responding to a difficult opening phase of qualifying with consecutive victories. The latest results restored momentum for a Latvian squad that has become one of Europe’s most competitive national teams in recent years.
South Sudan continued its rapid rise on the international stage by climbing to 24th. The African nation secured qualification for the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers after winning both of its games during the latest qualifying window.
Several teams also benefited from playing three qualifying games instead of two. Following the rescheduling of postponed fixtures, every team in the African Qualifiers, as well as teams in Groups C and D of the Asian Qualifiers and Venezuela and Colombia in the Americas, had additional opportunities to earn ranking points. Iran and Venezuela capitalized by climbing two positions in the latest standings.
Outside the top 100, the biggest improvements came from Caribbean nations competing in the FIBA AmeriCup 2029 Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers. Guyana moved up 10 places, Antigua and Barbuda jumped 15 spots, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines climbed 11 positions.
The next rankings update, following Window 4 in August, will also introduce a notable adjustment to FIBA’s ranking system. In addition to the existing bonus for victories by at least 15 points, teams winning by 30 points or more will receive a higher Margin of Victory multiplier, allowing dominant performances to carry greater weight in future rankings.
