It would appear the Chicago Sky are set to make a big change to their starting lineup involving WNBA star and guard Skylar Diggins.

While the team has not yet announced a move, Diggins took to Instagram on Monday to reveal she is now coming off the bench for Chicago.

Diggins has started in all 19 games for the Sky this season, which is her first with the team. In her 354 career games, Diggins has started in all but 13 of them.

“Now I’m coming off the bench?????? Cool,” Diggins wrote on her Instagram story.

“And the crazy part about it all is that… I’ve been so quiet. I’ve been so good and quiet. I’ve been so good and quiet,” she said in a video that was also posted to her story.

A former No. 3 overall pick of the Tulsa Shock in 2013, Diggins has gotten six All-WNBA nods and has been selected to seven All-Star games during her impressive career.

Diggins signed a two-year deal with the Sky in free agency this past offseason after spending the previous two years with the Seattle Storm. Diggins has also played for the Phoenix Mercury and the Dallas Wings during her career.

Why the Sky are benching Skylar Diggins

While Diggins is still a very good player, she is no doubt having a down season in Chicago.

Diggins is averaging 14.2 points, 4.9 assists and is shooting 39% from the floor. All of those numbers are down from last season and are lower than her career averages.

Diggins’ apparent benching comes amid a season in which the Sky are a disappointing 6-14, which has the team sitting in the second-to-last spot in the Eastern Conference and on the outside looking in for a playoff spot.

One now has to wonder if Diggins, who is no stranger to voicing her displeasure with the team this season, will try and force her way out of Chicago.

Who will replace Skylar Diggins?

Courtney Vandersloot

The Sky have not made the move official yet, so no replacement has been announced.

However, Courtney Vandersloot is the most likely option.

The veteran guard recently returned from a torn ACL and has appeared in three games since.

Vandersloot, who was Chicago’s starter in 2025 before suffering her injury, is averaging 8.7 points and six assists in 16 minutes per game off the bench.

We’ll know the Sky’s plan for sure by Tuesday, July 7, when Chicago plays its next game against the Mercury.
