The St. John’s Red Storm are losing a major piece from last season’s team with the departure of Zuby Eijofor to the NBA Draft. Ejiofor was out of eligibility anyways so the Red Storm was going to lose him regardless. But St. John’s just picked up a commitment via the transfer portal from Kyle Cuffe Jr., as per Pete Nakos of On3, a player that has ties to Ejiofor.

Kyle Cuffe Jr.‘s commitment to St. John’s gives the Red Storm three additions from the transfer portal this offseason, and Cuffe was actually roommates with Ejiofor back during the 2022-23 season at Kansas, as per David Berov of ‘Eye on the Storm’ podcast. Both players were freshmen with the Jayhawks that year, and both opted to enter the transfer portal after one season.

While Ejiofor landed at St. John’s, Cuffe spent last season playing at Mercer, after playing at Syracuse for two seasons. Although they are from the same recruiting class, Cuffe suffered a knee injury during the pair’s freshman year after only two games, thus allowing him to use a medical redshirt season and have one extra year of eligibility.

Cuffe appeared in a total of 31 games last season for Mercer, including 14 starts, at a little over 16 minutes per game. He averaged a career-high 7.3 points and 1.8 rebounds with splits of 39 percent shooting from the field, 33.6 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 75 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

He joins two other major transfers in Donnie Freeman and Avery Brown as St. John’s incoming portal players. In addition to the transfer portal, the Red Storm has five other newcomers in the mix in Theo Edema, Quinn Ellis, Lazar Stojkovic, Djordjie Jovanovic and Babacar Sane.
