Taylor Ruck Headed to Canadian Trials with Momentum After Batch of Solid Efforts

In a month, Canada’s top swimmers will gather in Montreal and battle for berths to this summer’s Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California. Pan Pacs has taken priority over the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and among those set to race at the Complex Montreal Olympic Pool is Team Canada veteran Taylor Ruck. A three-time Olympian, Ruck has opted for a heavy-on-competition approach to her preparation.

Over the past few weeks, Ruck has bounced around the globe for several racing opportunities. After competing at the Sacramento stop of the TYR Pro Series, she ventured to Europe for the Canet and Barcelona legs of the Mare Nostrum Series. The stretch has produced several solid performances from the 26-year-old, including a near-personal best of 58.71 in the 100 backstroke in Barcelona.

A longtime staple for Canada in international competition, Ruck owns four Olympic medals and nine World Championships medals, all from relay action. The way she has looked during her active racing stretch, she seems poised for a big summer. Her best effort of late arrived in a 100 backstroke victory in Barcelona, as Ruck went 58.71 to finish just shy of her personal best, a 58.55 from the 2019 campaign.

Now training at the Vancouver High Performance Center, Ruck also looked strong in freestyle and butterfly competition between her Sacramento visit and participation in two legs of the Mare Nostrum Series. She posted a trio of 24-mid efforts in the 50 freestyle and also dipped under the 26-second barrier in the 50 butterfly. For good measure, she logged a pair of sub-58 outings in the 100 fly.

Based on her recent results, Ruck looks prepared to put together a quality set of performances at the Canadian Trials, efforts that should serve as the framework for a strong summer at Pan Pacs.
