Texas Southern has officially released its 2026 football schedule, bringing clarity to where the Tigers will play their home games after weeks of uncertainty surrounding the program’s home venue.

According to a report from Kyle T. Mosley of HBCU Legends, the Texas Southern University Board of Regents approved the 2026 schedule, confirming that the Tigers will not play home games at Shell Energy Stadium this season.
Instead, Texas Southern will host five of its six home contests at W.W. Thorne Stadium, with its annual homecoming game against Southern set to be played at NRG Stadium on Oct. 24. The move marks a significant change for the program. Since 2012, Texas Southern has played the majority of its home football games at Shell Energy Stadium, formerly known as BBVA Compass Stadium. Located just east of downtown Houston, the soccer-specific venue sits only a few miles from the university’s campus in Houston’s Third Ward, making it an easily accessible destination for students, alumni and fans.

This season, however, the Tigers will make W.W. Thorne Stadium their primary home field. The renovated 10,000-seat Aldine ISD facility is located roughly 15 miles north of campus. Depending on traffic, the trip from Texas Southern can take approximately 25 to more than 30 minutes.

The venue change comes as Texas Southern continues planning for the future. Last week, university officials unveiled plans to construct a new on-campus football stadium that would seat up to 10,000 fans. The proposed facility would give the Tigers a permanent home on campus for the first time in decades and has generated excitement among alumni and supporters.
The schedule release also comes after an encouraging 2025 campaign for the Tigers. Texas Southern exceeded expectations last season, finishing with a 6-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in SWAC play, positioning the program as a potential contender heading into 2026.
Now, the Tigers will look to build on that momentum while adjusting to a new home-field environment for most of the season.
