The 49ers are bringing back DT Evan Anderson; Kaelon Black returns to practice

by

The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of defensive tackle Evan Anderson. To make room for Anderson, the team waived/injured Titus Leo, who signed with the team on August 2.

Anderson is a familiar face after playing a little more than 250 snaps for the 49ers as an undrafted rookie in 2024. He should be able to catch on pretty quickly and serve as a preseason body until Halton can return.

Leo played 31 snaps as an edge rusher in the first preseason game. Hopefully this move is not a sign that rookie defensive tackle Gracen Halton’s ankle injury is more serious than a day-to-day status. Halton missed Sunday’s practice.

The 49ers will hold a joint practice in El Segundo, California, on Tuesday morning against the Los Angeles Chargers. We’ll see if Halton suits up, although it’s unlikely. Don’t expect to hear about quarterback Kurtis Rourke, either, as he recovers from a rib injury.

We will hear about rookie running back Kaelon Black, who is in uniform for the first time since suffering an adductor injury during the first week of camp. The 49ers wouldn’t bring Black back unless he were 100 percent healthy. They’ll want to see what they have in the rookie over these next couple of weeks to see how often they can use him early on in the season — especially if Christian McCaffrey‘s muscle tightness lingers into September.

Black’s return also explains why the team let go of Khalil Herbert Monday.
