The college basketball season is not that far away now, and after all the turmoil we’ve seen in the last few months, it’ll be nice to get back to basics, and to have players on the court, rather than in court.
And it’s true that the start of the season has long had a celebratory aspect, with fun events.

Normally, we say go for it. It’s a wonderful sport, and you want to see what various teams have to offer.
However, can you have too much of a good thing? Kanye West, Rick James, and perhaps soon the Philadelphia 76ers would agree: Yes. Yes, you can.
What are we referring to? That would be the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon.
What is the point of this? What is the point of having teams play at 12:00 A.M., 3:00 A.M., and 6:00 A.M.? And 9:00 A.M. isn’t much better.

Honestly, this is one of the worst ideas we’ve ever seen. Presumably, some of the revenue will go to the players, and that would be a strong motivation for a lot of these schools, because they certainly can’t compete for NIL money with the power conference schools.
But what athletes are expected to work overnight? Playing a competitive game at 3:00 A.M., frankly, seems cruel. It’s going to take a few days for those teams to get back to normal.
Just a terrible idea no matter how you look at it. We hope that at least they’re well paid.
