Twitter Gold: Larry Johnson Explains Duke’s Stunning 1991 Upset Of UNLV

by

After UNLV devastated Duke in the 1990 championship game, no one really thought the Blue Devils would prevail in 1991.

Well, there were a couple of exceptions. DePaul’s Joey Meyer thought Duke could do it and said so publicly, and of course, Mike Krzyzewski was positive his team could do it.

Most people thought it was a done deal. At 34-0, there was no way Vegas was losing to Duke.

Except of course, they did, falling 79-77. And Rebels star Larry Johnson says he knows why UNLV lost: it was his fault.

In this video, Johnson said he was so sure that Vegas would beat Duke that he was “lallygagging” out there.

And when the final shot came, Johnson, who was the best player in college that year, balked, and passed the ball further out to Anderson Hunt, who missed a long three that would’ve won the game.

Then, instead of Duke’s brilliant, gutty play, the conversation would have again been how the Blue Devils could get close, but not win the championship.

We’re in a similar situation now with Jon Scheyer, where people respect his overall talents, but are suggesting he can’t win the big one. However, it took Krzyzewski 11 years and five Final Fours before he got his first title.
