While his February buzzer-beater to beat Duke carved himself a permanent place in UNC basketball lore, Seth Trimble will also be remembered for his rare loyalty, particularly in an era dominated by NIL money and the transfer portal.
Trimble spent his first four years playing college basketball at North Carolina, turning from a key bench player into a full-time starter and the Tar Heels‘ top defender. With a recent injunction against the NCAA, though, Trimble and many other student-athletes gained a fifth year of eligibility.

Trimble transferred to Louisville on Wednesday, giving one of the ACC’s top programs an even-more dangerous roster. Shortly after Trimble’s decision, UNC athletic director Steve Newmark released a statement regarding Trimble’s impact in Chapel Hill.
“Seth has been an incredible representative of the University of North Carolina, both on and off the court,” Newmark said. “We appreciate everything he has given to Carolina basketball. He has been a true role model and we’re proud that he chose to stay at UNC for four years. We also understand how difficult and complicated this situation has been for everyone involved. The recent court decision in Colorado created an unusual situation for student-athletes who had completed their traditional, four years of eligibility. The timing of the decision, the ongoing legal process and the circumstances surrounding our roster made that increasingly difficult to navigate. We are grateful for Seth’s contributions to our program and the University. And to us, Seth will always be a Tar Heel.”
Sure, you could question Trimble’s loyalty by transferring to an ACC rival, but he also previously withdrew himself from the portal and returned to North Carolina for his junior season, a decision that greatly benefitted him.
UNC will play Louisville twice this season, hosting the Cardinals and traveling out West, with dates and times to be announced. Will Trimble get a nice, warm reaction from Tar Heel Nation?
