Michigan State football wrapped up spring practice on Saturday with their “Spring Showcase” event, and new head coach Pat Fitzgerald had some thoughts to share afterwards.
The Spartans played some football in front of a live crowd at Spartan Stadium on Saturday, with the “Spring Showcase” event serving as an open practice to wrap up spring ball. The event was a mixture of practice drills, live scrimmage and other fun player games like dizzy bat.
Following the event, Fitzgerald met with the local media to discuss his Spartans as they look ahead to summer workouts and eventually fall camp before the 2026 season. Here are some of the highlights from Fitzgerald’s press conference:

Fitzgerald said he’s proud of the progress made this spring. “Our body weights are up, over six pounds per guy. The brotherhood is being forged, to see it come together, I am really proud of the guys.”
-
He went on to add he “could not be more excited for the future of Michigan State football.”
-
Fitzgerald said he likes where the roster currently is, stating there is plenty of depth to compete at a high level.
-
Fitzgerald wanted fans and media to be cautious from who had good days and bad days on Saturday, stating it was “a day of practice.”
-
Fitzgerald is already looking ahead to next season, with a count down tracker of when fall camp begins, the Spartans’ first game and when they’ll play rival Michigan.
-
“We will be back for training camp in 110 days,” Fitzgerald said. “We will be back at Spartan Stadium for the opener in 141 days, and we take on Michigan in 203 days. Those are top of mind.”
-
Fitzgerald spoke highly of young wide receiver Bryson Williams. “Bryson Williams is a big player that has an exciting future. We are very excited for him.”
-
Fitzgerald confirmed Michigan State left Saturday’s event healthy, stating he’s the happiest guy in the program because of that.
-
While happy with what he saw in the spring, Fitzgerald knows there is still plenty of room for improvement and will leave the door open for any players to win a starting spot when fall camp comes around. “That road of improvement is always under construction. You never know when it will click for a guy. I will never give up on a guy.”
-
Fitzgerald wrapped up the press conference stating “it’s been a great spring” for Michigan State football.
Michigan State football will open the 2026 season against Toledo on September 5 from Spartan Stadium.
