Where Florida State basketball lands in early ACC projections

by

Expectations remain modest but optimistic for the Florida State Seminoles entering the 2026-27 men’s basketball season. In his way-too-early ACC basketball tiers for CBS Sports, college basketball analyst Isaac Trotter placed Florida State in Tier 4, labeled “The Bubble,” positioning the Seminoles among a group of teams projected to compete for NCAA Tournament consideration rather than contend for the top of the conference.

Trotter’s rankings come as programs across the ACC continue reshaping their rosters through recruiting and the transfer portal ahead of the upcoming season. Florida State was grouped alongside programs such as the SMU Mustangs, Virginia Tech Hokies, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the bubble tier. According to Trotter, the Seminoles possess enough talent to make a push toward the NCAA Tournament but still face questions as the roster continues to develop entering the second season under head coach Luke Loucks.

The placement reflects a program that appears to be trending upward after an active offseason. Florida State has added talent through both recruiting and the transfer portal while continuing to build around Loucks’ vision for the program. The Seminoles also received a boost on the recruiting trail, currently holding the No. 11-ranked 2026 recruiting class nationally according to the 247Sports composite team rankings.

While FSU landed in the middle tier of Trotter’s projections, the ACC’s upper levels remain crowded. Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball occupied the top tier, while programs including Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball and North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball were among the teams expected to challenge near the top of the league.

Way-too-early rankings are often fluid as rosters continue to evolve throughout the offseason, but Florida State’s placement in the bubble tier suggests national analysts see the Seminoles as a team capable of returning to postseason relevance. With a highly regarded recruiting class and another offseason to build continuity under Loucks, Florida State will have an opportunity to outperform those expectations once the 2026-27 season begins.
