Where Utah ranks among best Big 12 football stadiums

The Utah Utes are one of the few college football teams with a scenic advantage. Where Rice-Eccles Stadium sits, nestled into the Rocky Mountains, makes it one of the unique venues in all sports.

Many people would say the Big 12 provides some of the best backdrops. There are no lies detected with such a statement. While each school has something special to offer in terms of football stadiums, Utah is No. 1, according to USA TODAY Sports’ Jordan Mendoza.

Rice-Eccles Stadium has a rich history, including hosting the 2002 Winter Olympic opening ceremonies in Salt Lake City. With a capacity of over 51,000 strong, Utah consistently sells out games with only six losses in night games over the past ten years. The Utes have a clear home field advantage regardless of which conference they’re participating in.

With Utah at the top of Mendoza’s stadium rankings, who came in last at No. 16?

The Houston Cougars are in the Big 12 basement. TDECU Stadium has tried to bring H-Town energy by adding great food and beverage options, such as a Trill Burger location inside the venue. But being in one of the biggest metropolitan areas isn’t an easy sell due to pro competition.

At No. 15, David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium has improved drastically in Lawrence. But there’s nothing attractive about the great plains.

Arizona’s Casino Del Sol Stadium (No. 14), UCF’s Acrisure Bounce House (No. 13) and Baylor’s McLane Stadium (No. 12) are all mid. Just behind Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium (No. 11), West Virginia’s Milan Puskar Stadium (No. 10) and TCU’s Amon G. Carter Stadium (No. 9) to round out the bottom half.

Arizona State’s Mountain America Stadium was in the top half, but should be higher than No. 8. The desert vibes of Tempe mixed with the arena sitting on the banks of the Salt River is majestic with Scottsdale right on the other side.

Texas Tech’s recently-named Galaxy Stadium (No. 7), Kansas State’s Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium (No. 6) and Iowa State’s Jack Trice Stadium (No. 5) aren’t good enough to be in the top 25 percent.

Oklahoma State’s Boone Pickens Stadium at No. 4 doesn’t seem right. However, the Red Dirt music scene adds culture to the friendly venue.

Two of Utah’s biggest rivals are considered to be a runner-up. Colorado’s Folsom Field is iconic for many reasons, including being the home of Ralphie, who is CU’s live mascot buffalo. Just like Rice-Eccles Stadium, the historic stadium sits at the base of the Rockies.

BYU’s LaVell Edwards Stadium is at No. 2. According to Mendoza, the rival Cougars present an “intimidating presence where it feels like the crowd is right on top of you, and BYU has done a great job of making it a full experience where the crowd is always engaged, whether it’s doing a stripe out or letting mascot Cosmo’s shenanigans hype everyone up.”

Rice-Eccles Stadium stands alone at the top of the Big 12, and it’s clear to see why no other atmosphere comes close.
