Carlos Ulberg undergoes surgery after UFC 327 knee injury

by

New belt. New scar. It’s been quite a week for Carlos Ulberg.

Five days after Ulberg (14-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) won light heavyweight gold when he knocked out Jiri Prochazka at UFC 327, the new titleholder went under the knife to repair a knee injury. Ulberg posted an Instagram story Thursday with the caption “knee surgery done” and a picture of him lying in a hospital bed. This came just hours after Ulberg posted a picture of Harry Reid International Airport, meaning the surgery likely took place in Las Vegas.

It’s still unclear what the exact extent of the damage to Ulberg’s knee was, or what his recovery timeline will be. Ulberg damaged it in one of the opening exchanges of Saturday’s main event at Kaseya Center in Miami, but somehow still found a way to knock out Prochazka (32-6-1 MMA, 6-3 UFC).

After the fight, Prochazka claimed he made the mistake of showing mercy to his injured opponent and then paid the price. The claim lit a fire under Ulberg, who unloaded on Prochazka, this time verbally. Ulberg said he has no interest in an immediate rematch with Prochazka, but given his injury timeline, it’s unclear what the promotion’s next move is or if an interim title will be implemented.
