The Golden State Warriors are evaluating contingency plans as uncertainty surrounds Steve Kerr’s future, with a new report linking the franchise to Florida head coach Todd Golden.

According to Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, Golden State could expand its coaching search beyond the NBA if Kerr steps away. “If Kerr walks, ESPN reported that the front office would consider external candidates, even exploring the college ranks,” O’Connor wrote.

O’Connor added that Golden has strong ties to the organization and has long been on its radar. “I’m told the Warriors love Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden,” he reported.

The connection is rooted in familiarity and prior evaluation. “He’s known the Lacob family for years, and league sources say they’ve long admired his coaching talent ever since he was an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco,” O’Connor wrote.

Golden’s résumé has grown rapidly at the college level, highlighted by a 160–77 career record and a national championship run in 2025. He also led Florida to an SEC regular-season title in 2026 and earned SEC Coach of the Year honors.

Despite that success, O’Connor noted that a move to Golden State is far from certain. “But Golden would be no guarantee to leave Florida for a Warriors franchise that is, frankly, a less appealing destination than it used to be,” he wrote.

The current roster context presents a challenge for any incoming coach. “With aging stars and no youthful core to build around, the Warriors may no longer be in a position to get exactly what they want,” O’Connor added.

Golden State is coming off a 37-45 season that ended in the play-in tournament, reflecting inconsistency on both ends of the floor. The team struggled with turnovers, late-game execution, and heavy reliance on perimeter shooting variance.

Even when Stephen Curry returned to form, the Warriors lacked sustained offensive balance and defensive stability. Jimmy Butler’s ACL injury further disrupted rotations and reduced lineup continuity.

Kerr is expected to meet with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy within the next two weeks to determine his future. His decision will shape whether the franchise prioritizes continuity or initiates a broader reset.

If the position opens, Golden would represent a stylistic shift toward a younger, system-driven approach built on spacing and decision-making. His teams have emphasized pace, ball movement, and shot quality, principles that align with Golden State’s offensive identity.

However, the transition from college to the NBA presents variables, particularly managing veteran stars in a win-now environment. Golden State’s timeline remains tied to Curry and Draymond Green, increasing the urgency of any coaching hire.

As the organization approaches a pivotal offseason, the coaching decision will be directly tied to roster construction and long-term direction. Golden’s name signals openness to change, but Kerr’s final call remains the defining factor.
