As the New York Liberty prepare for the 2026 season, the team will once again be led by its big three of Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, and Jonquel Jones. With Ionescu entering her seventh season with the Liberty, she would speak on the one thing that has led to the success of the team.

New York has been to two WNBA Finals in 2023 and 2024, winning in the latter, and though the team lost in the first round to the Phoenix Mercury last season, there’s no denying the success of the franchise. For Ionescu, she would emphasize the sacrifice that Stewart, Jones, and she have had to make, honing in on their team-first approach.
“It’s everything,” Ionescu said about sacrifice, via Geoff Magliocchetti. “We understand what it takes to win and what it you know, takes to lose, like we felt both of those things before as a group. And that’s kind of the nice part. It’s like you’ve gone through a lot together, so you’re able to just pick up where you left off and understanding what you have to sacrifice for the team.”
Sabrina Ionescu on the Liberty’s mindset
The Liberty have been one of the best teams in the WNBA for the past number of years and look to do the same in 2026, as the unit has the right mindset, as Ionescu echoes.

“And understanding what you need to do every single night, how you need to show up, be a pro, everyone’s leadership continues to grow,” Ionescu said. “And knowing what a blessing it is to wear a Liberty Jersey every single night, and how these new players in our locker room that come through this organization, we want to kind of make sure they understand that sense of pride that you are supposed to feel, and obviously us three kind of spearhead that as the leaders of the team, but everyone feels that.”
At any rate, Ionescu and New York look to start the season with a bang as they open against the Connecticut Sun on May 8.
