University of Georgia Joins Virginia in College Swimming League
The University of Georgia announced on Friday that it will join the first season of the College Swimming League.
The Bulldogs are the second of 12 teams to announce their participation, joining the University of Virginia. Both the men’s and women’s teams will compete, with results counting toward NCAA qualification and dual-meet requirements.
“Few programs carry the history Georgia does,” CSL CEO Robert Kent said in a press release. “The Bulldogs have been a force in this sport for decades, and bringing a name like that into our first season gives fans a program they already know and respect. Their tradition and the energy that comes out of Athens are going to make every match they’re in worth watching.”
The “high-octane, fan-focused competition” is the latest attempt to breathe new life into college competition. The season will feature six total regular-season dual meets and a two-match postseason for the top four teams. Each participating team will take part in two regular season matches. Rosters will be limited to 14 men and 14 women per team.
“Georgia is going to be a tough team to contend with from day one,” CSL COO Kyle Sockwell said. “Stefanie (Williams Moreno) and Neil (Versfeld) have built rosters with real depth, and depth is what wins in a format where every lineup decision swings the match. This is a program with seven national titles in its history, so the Bulldogs know how to show up when it counts.”
