Tony Parker has officially begun the next chapter of his basketball career, taking over as head coach of France’s Under-17 national team ahead of the upcoming FIBA U17 World Cup in Istanbul.

The former San Antonio Spurs star has already started preparations with the squad and admitted he is approaching the role with plenty of enthusiasm.

“I’m so excited. Like the first day of school,” Parker said. “I was so happy to put on this French national team jersey again.”

The position marks Parker’s first coaching assignment and serves as a stepping stone before he takes charge of ASVEL Villeurbanne next season, where he is expected to become the highest-paid coach in the French League.

Despite his legendary status in French basketball, Parker never played in a FIBA World Cup during his career.

He explained that the international calendar was different during his playing days, making it difficult for top players to participate in every major tournament.

“To put things in context, back then, the World Championship wasn’t the competition everyone wanted to play in,” Parker said.

“Since there was EuroBasket every two years and the Olympic Games, it was tough to play every summer.”
