Over the past three years, the Washington Huskies have ventured into new territories and begun to make the Big Ten school a national presence on the recruiting trail.
On Tuesday, four-star St. Joseph Regional edge Chaz Gray became the 18th verbal commitment for UW in the 2027 recruiting class, marking the second consecutive cycle that the Huskies have procured a prospect from New Jersey, with four-star DePaul Catholic quarterback Derek Zammit signing with the program in the 2026 class.
Gray ultimately chose the Huskies over Clemson and Tennessee, his other two finalists, which in itself is a statement victory for the Big Ten program on the recruiting trail to pull an East Coast prospect over two schools that have both a geographical and more traditional appeal.

It’s a part of the benefit that hiring and retaining defensive coordinator Ryan Walters brings for Jedd Fisch.
“From the defensive plan they had for me when I get there to the support program of the football team, it is a [perfect] fit for me to go there,” Gray said of why UW ultimately won out for his services over the Tigers and Volunteers.
In addition to Walters’ role in securing Gray’s commitment, several others on staff played a critical role, including both defensive line coach Jason Kaufusi and outside linebackers coach Aaron Van Horn, along with director of player personnel Jake Crawford, who made a visit to St. Joseph Regional during the spring evaluation period.
The reason why UW put in so many resources and personnel to recruit Gray to Seattle is that the four-star Montvale, New Jersey native is a nearly unstoppable force in the defensive trenches.
At 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, Gray has high-end instincts at the point of attack driven by a relentless motor, something Walters knows is necessary to compete weekly in the Big Ten. Putting together consecutive recruiting classes with elite defensive ends and edges, as UW signed four-star Derek Colman-Brusa and fellow in-state four-star Ramzak Fruean, is essential to keeping the Huskies among the top six schools in the conference.

While it may be easier to stay on the western half of the country for talent, from the day Fisch was hired in January 2024, the third-year head coach has maintained that his program will go recruit elite talent across the country, and the latest example of that plan coming to fruition is the addition of Gray.
