As the recruiting landscape changes, summer is becoming the biggest season for college football recruiting. NIL, multiple National Signing Days and even the transfer portal have contributed to the change in the recruiting calendar. And no team benefitted more in June than Texas, especially one commitment in particular – John Meredith III.
Meredith is the No. 2 player in the 2027 recruiting class and the biggest name to make his decision in June. Now, the recruiting experts at Rivals have named his Texas commitment the biggest in a big month.

Meredith is the highest ranked defensive back commitment in Texas football recruiting history. Which is saying something considering three former Longhorns have won the Thorpe Award as the country’s best DB. He’s the third top 100 2027 defender committed to the Longhorns, along with outside linebacker Jabarrius Garror and defensive lineman Kasi Currie are both pledged to UT.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound cornerback made three visits to the Forty Acres, his official visit was a couple of weeks ago. Notably, that visit was after his official visit to College Station.
“It was hard,” Meredith told Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman. “I really wanted to go to A&M. I always felt the love at Texas. I was comfortable at A&M, but in reality, you can’t settle where you’re comfortable.”
Longhorns cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey and first-year defensive coordinator Will Muschamp were reportedly key to landing the Texas native.
“They were keeping it real with me. I want to be the best DB in the world, and Texas will help me through it. I believe that Texas can do it,” Meredith said. “It’s all about the development part. I put all my trust and all my beans in their hands. I can call Coach (Mark Orphey) in the morning, at night, whatever it is. He watches my reps and he tells me what was wrong. He has a great protocol.”
Getting a commitment from the No. 2 overall prospect and the top cornerback in the country is no small feat. It’s probably even sweeter for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff that they beat out rival Texas A&M.
