Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey has been one of the hottest players in the WNBA as of late. During the team’s June 25 game against the Los Angeles Sparks, she exploded for 53 points on 17-of-28 shooting from the field.

Mabrey also recorded six rebounds and two assists, helping the Tempo beat the Sparks 125-97. With her performance, she matched the WNBA’s single-game scoring record held by Liz Cambage and A’ja Wilson.

The 29-year-old star returned to action on Sunday against the Dallas Wings after missing one game due to a neck injury. She was impressive for Toronto once again, recording a team-high 19 points, along with five rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block.

Unfortunately, the Tempo lost to the Wings, 89-76. Mabrey and the rest of Toronto had no answer for Dallas’ balanced scoring, with all starters scoring in double figures. Paige Bueckers led the way for the Texas franchise with 22 points.

Making matters worse for Mabrey, she received a technical foul in the second quarter of the contest, which puts her in line to receive a disciplinary action from the WNBA.

It was Mabrey’s second tech of the season after she received her first against the Phoenix Mercury in May. During that game, she shoved WNBA rookie Jovana Nogic.

The league rules state that a player’s first three technical fouls each carry a $500 fine. The fourth through seventh technical fouls will cost $1,000 each, while each tech thereafter carries a $1,500 fine and a one-game suspension.

Considering that Mabrey has been the Tempo’s best player this season, she will certainly need to be more careful if she wants to avoid a suspension. The Tempo, at 9-11 on the season, are still in contention for a playoff spot.
