As I look at what North Carolina has done over the past few months, I really have a strong feeling that Michael Malone has done a much better job in the transfer portal than he’s getting credit for.
That doesn’t mean North Carolina is going into next season as the favorite to win a national championship, but I strongly believe it can be one of the best teams in America, and guys like Terrence Brown are going to be the reason why. Brown, a transfer from the University of Utah, had a very good season a year ago, averaging 19.9 points and showing that he can score against Big 12 talent, perhaps the best college basketball conference in the country.

His transition to the ACC shouldn’t be much of a concern, though some still don’t view him as a major transfer portal addition, with ESPN only ranking him 43rd.
“Pre-commitment analysis: Brown’s scoring ability surprisingly translated from the NEC to the Big 12, as he averaged 19.9 points this past season for the Utes after posting 20.6 points in 2024-25 at Fairleigh Dickinson. He also contributed nearly four assists per game. Brown had two 30-point games this past season and averaged 23.5 points in two games against BYU.
“Outlook with new team: North Carolina desperately needed proven production on the perimeter, and Brown checks that box. He’s a capable distributor with high-major experience, so expect Michael Malone to lean on him,” ESPN wrote.
Brown is a bit inefficient at times, which is the only thing I’m really worried about. He shot 45.3% from the field and has only shot 44% in his college basketball career, including 29.4% from 3-point range.

However, he shot the best he ever did from three at 32.7% on 3.1 attempts per game at 32. My favorite part about his game is that he can get to the free-throw line at a very high level, and I expect that to continue at North Carolina. For all those reasons and more, I just have to say he’s at least a top-25 transfer portal addition.
