Demetrious Johnson explains why retiring from fighting was easy adjustment

by

When Demetrious Johnson walked away from MMA, it was unlike most stories in fighting.

Fighters often hang around the game when their best days are behind them, whether it be for financial need, competitive desire, fear of adjusting to normal life, or a combination of all of those things. For Johnson, he walked through the exit door on his own terms, perhaps earlier than some expected, and couldn’t be happier with his decision.

“I think for me, probably because my whole career, I’ve stayed humbled and had humility,” Johnson told MMA Junkie and other reporters on the 2026 Hall of Fame red carpet. “You know, I never let the lights get to me. After I’ll have a big amazing fight – I’ll never forget after I won at UFC 152, became a champion, I was on the couch. I was doing an interview, I think it was AXS TV HD Fight Net with Kenny Florian and Bas Rutten. They were like, ‘What are you doing with all the money?’ I was like, ‘I put it in the bank. I got to mow the lawn. I’ll chat with you guys later.’

“So, I always kept that normal citizen life. Now that I’m retired, it’s been easy for me not to look at fighting because, you know, you look at the standard in mixed martial arts, you see a lot of guys (saying), ‘I’m retiring because my body is giving out. I’m retiring because I’m not winning. I’m tired,’ or whatever. For me, I was like, I felt like I’ve done everything. I don’t know what else is left to do. Let me go challenge myself with my intellect, and see if I can provide for my family in that way.”

Johnson (24-5-1) turned pro in 2009 and soon after became the face of the men’s flyweight division. He won the UFC title in 2012 by defeating Joseph Benavidez, sparking a record-setting run of 11 title defenses. After dropping the title in a very close split decision rematch against Henry Cejudo, Johnson went to ONE Championship to win another world title overseas.

“I always tell people that I think you gotta be able to do both,” Johnson said. “You look at ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, Wanderlei Silva, Mirko Cro Cop, Antonio Nogueira – I mean, the list just goes on. I think it’s important to be able to do both. I’m glad I got the opportunity to do both, right? A lot of people don’t have that desire to do that. I’ve always wanted that desire, and I’m grateful I was able to do it and be successful on both sides of the world.”

Johnson’s last fight was a successful first title defense of his ONE Championship title in May 2023, but then he decided to walk away from the sport to focus on other ventures – and seems to have no regrets about his decision. Although his name is now in the Modern Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame, Johnson’s is recognized as one of the real pioneers of the men’s flyweight division, paving the way for the new wave of exciting 125-pound fighters putting on incredible fights on a regular basis.
