It’s not out of the norm for there to be a tiny bit of shit-flingin’ between rivals at events like SEC Media Days, where Texas football athletes like Arch Manning and others are currently playing student-ambassador to their respective university’s program and brand at a very long media event.
And this year is no exception.

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was chosen as one of the Sooners’ representative athletes at this year’s event. The returning starter joined Texas’ notable rival in Norman after leaving Washington State shortly after the Pac-12 crumbled as a result of several conference realignment moves that were triggered after, perhaps ironically, Oklahoma and Texas joined the SEC in 2024.
Mateer was seemingly eager to get another piece of the Longhorns.
Especially if he’s lucky enough to be healthy at the time, unlike in last season’s loss to Texas.
The Longhorns beat the Sooner 23-6 last year.
“Looking forward to another opportunity [versus Texas],” Mateer said, according to 247Sports. “I mean, I’m not going to sit here and make an excuse. We lost. I lost. But, I mean, you can imagine 17 days [after undergoing surgery], it was difficult.”
