Jalyx Hunt had a great day. On one rep he had a 1-on-1 vs. Mailata, who was on an island. Hunt got Mailata leaning outside before jumping back inside with a free path to Hurts, and he got the “sack.” On the next play Hunt then beat Mailata to the outside for another “sack,” although that one was more of a coverage sack. Hunt also had a tackle for loss on Tank Bigsby, and he just generally he set the edge well against the run.

Two buzzworthy players who stood out in practice: Hunt and running back Tank Bigsby. Jalyx Hunt forced pressure against the Eagles’ first-team offensive line. Bigsby showed some juice catching the ball out of the backfield and could carve a role on offense.

Hunting season. Greenard’s absence pushed Jalyx Hunt into the starting spot at right outside linebacker opposite Nolan Smith Jr. Hunt will likely play as many snaps as the other two this season. There’s an argument to be made that he should get more playing time than Smith. Nevertheless, he took advantage of his opportunities with Greenard out. Hunt shot into the backfield unblocked and forced Hurts to check down to Cooper on one play-action pass that came from under center. He blew up tight end Dallas Goedert with an edge rush and Hurts had to hurry a dump to Bigsby that wasn’t caught. And he beat Mailata on back-to-back rushes — one with an inside move and the other from the outside — that blew up pass plays.

JALEN HURTS UPDATE: Just like the headline says, there were encouraging signs from the Eagles’ quarterback and the team’s new offense. Was it perfect? No, it wasn’t. There were drops. There were procedural penalties, as Lane Johnson brought up during his post-practice press conference. But this offense looked much more functional than the version that was largely dominated by Vic Fangio’s defense during the team’s spring practices.

Updated Roster Prediction – Iggles Blitz
QB – 3 – Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, Cole Payton. The team has four QBs for now. Andy Dalton is the odd man out in my projection. The Eagles could look to trade him if some team wants a veteran this summer. They could also trade McKee, but only for a good return. The only way that happens is if another team loses a key QB due to injury and still wants to be competitive this season. I’m guessing McKee remains with the Eagles. Payton has to play his way onto the roster. Kyle McCord couldn’t do that last year. I think Payton is a better prospect and the team will do what they can to hold onto him because of his upside.

Jalen Hurts has a new mantra. Listening to Nick Sirianni’s team address at the start of training camp, Jalen Hurts wrote down what will likely be his mantra for 2026: 100% alignment, 0% entitlement. Whether the phrase originated from Sirianni or if it was Hurts’ interpretation, Hurts opened his first press conference of the season emphasizing “discipline and unity” at the center of everything. Parse that how you choose, but it’s a message that underscores something Sirianni also harped on during the spring. When everyone is rowing in the same direction, this team has been more successful than just about anyone. Hurts seems to be acknowledging that from the jump this year. It’s fair to wonder if correlation doesn’t equal causation here. The 2024 Eagles had plenty of tension before going on to win Super Bowl LIX and the 2022 may have had the best “vibes” of any team I’ve covered, but it’s noteworthy nonetheless that Hurts and Sirianni are keying in on this so much at the start of the season in reflection of last year.

There were some encouraging signs from the Eagles’ new-look offense on Day 1 of camp. The learning curve they’re working through is obvious — there was one sequence where a pre-snap penalty was followed by a botched running play when Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley were on different pages. But there were also moments where things clicked, like on a hookup between Hurts and DeVonta Smith where Hurts dropped to his right and zipped a strike to his now-No. 1 receiver down the left seam with Quinyon Mitchell tight in coverage. Hurts worked primarily under center and targeted the middle of the field a good amount, departures from how he has generally operated to this point in the NFL. There was enough good mixed in to consider it a positive opening to the summer.

Jalen Carter, $152 million wealthier than he was a couple days ago, promised Wednesday that becoming the highest-paid interior lineman in NFL history won’t change who he is or how he goes about his business. “I don’t really think the money is ever gonna change me,” Davis said after the first practice of training camp. When you get picked in the first round and you’re a top-10 pick, you kind of get a little bit of decent money. And that didn’t change me. I still came in, I had a goal, let the team know and the fans know that the goal was to get a championship. And it happened. But it’s a new contract and it’s time to get more championships for the city of Philly.”

TE Eli Stowers. In his four-year run with the Eagles, A.J. Brown averaged 130 targets per season. So, in the wake of Brown’s trade to New England, Philadelphia has an obvious pass-catching vacuum. Who will fill it? First-round receiver Makai Lemon certainly factors in as a slot machine to complement DeVonta Smith, but I wouldn’t overlook the potential impact of this second-round tight end. Truth be told, Stowers feels more like a supersized receiver at 6-4, 239 pounds. A converted quarterback who showcased rare athleticism at the NFL Scouting Combine, the reigning John Mackey Award winner (college football’s most outstanding tight end) wasn’t drafted to be an in-line blocker. But in an NFL that’s increasingly obsessed with multi-TE formations, new Eagles OC Sean Mannion could deploy the rookie in a playmaking role to complement veteran mainstay Dallas Goedert and recently inked blocking tight end Johnny Mundt.

It has been a minute, hasn’t it? The “E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES” chants. The intensity of practice. The voices of coaches. Players chirping. On a picture-perfect Wednesday at the Jefferson Health Training Complex, your favorite football team returned to the practice fields for Day 1 of the 2026 Training Camp and it was everything you’d hoped it would be. Good, crisp football. Obvious competition throughout the roster. Optimism throughout, along with the understanding that it is a small step in a series of many, and that there is a whole lot of work ahead. Nothing is going to be given to these Philadelphia Eagles, and that’s the way it should be.

The Cowboys are doing that right now at a level that should excite fans considerably, and coach Schottenheimer started to get into this later on during opening remarks. The same rookie head coach that said the reason the Cowboys would be contenders with him at the helm was in part because of how hard he works before the 2025 season, said that his new rookie defensive coordinator Christian Parker is “maybe the hardest working coach I’ve ever been around.”

The Commanders need more weapons. This is all we have been hearing from the national and local media and, of course, the fans. Much of the offseason focus was trying to get a true complement opposite receiver Terry McLaurin in an attempt to get quarterback Jayden Daniels more weapons. Although those efforts went largely unrewarded, there is some reason for fans to be optimistic about what Washington currently has on the team.
NY Giants ‘will take it one day at a time’ with recovering Malik Nabers – Big Blue View
Malik Nabers did not do a lot on Wednesday during the first practice of New York Giants training camp. Nabers took part in some wide receiver agility drills, then ran a few routes. Every bit that that Nabers, coming back from a torn ACL that cost him most of last season, did on the field was an encouraging sign for the Giants. Nabers, as has been well-documented, had two surgeries to repair the ACL. The fact that the Giants did not place the 23-year-old on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list meant that he could get on the practice field at The Greenbrier Sports Performance Center from Day 1.

QB Drake Maye: The Patriots’ quarterback started a bit slowly and his connection with A.J. Brown remains a work in progress, but he overall had a good day — an encouraging development after struggling with accuracy during the last full-speed practice on Sunday. Maye got into a rhythm during 11-on-11s, finding Boutte on his long touchdowns and also connecting with Hunter Henry and Rhamondre Stevenson for long completions.

Very quickly, Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry has wrapped up some important contract discussions with key defenders on the team’s roster. As Browns training camp was set to get underway, CB Denzel Ward signed a huge extension to stay with the Browns. Ward’s extension will reportedly make him the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL and came after he avoided offseason activities as part of negotiations. Next on Berry’s list was S Grant Delpit, who was set to be a free agent at the end of the season. Cleveland’s second-round pick in 2020, Delpit signed a three-year contract extension in 2023 and is now inking another three-year extension to that deal. [BLG Note: There was thought that the Eagles could trade for Delpit. Won’t be happening now.]

In addition to James, the Sixers traded for Jaylen Brown over the offseason, adding both All-Star players to a roster that already includes Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe, and Tyrese Maxey. There is no reason this team can’t compete with anyone in the league. But it doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best team in the league, or even the Eastern Conference for that matter. With the defending world champion New York Knicks right down the road, a still intriguing Boston Celtics, a revamped Miami Heat, and a challenging Cleveland Cavaliers, the East is anything but a cake walk.
