The Indiana Fever had an open developmental contract roster spot available, and they addressed that spot on Friday with the signing of Michelle Onyiah, as per Annie Costabile of The Athletic. The Fever had yet to fill that spot after the Las Vegas Aces signed away rookie Justine Pissott earlier this month.

Michelle Onyiah’s signing with the Fever is significant in that it’s the first UPSHOT league signing for a WNBA roster spot. UPSHOT began its inaugural season this summer as a professional alternative for women’s basketball players who weren’t in the WNBA. The league began with four teams in the Jacksonville Waves, Savannah Steel, Greensboro Groove and Charlotte Crown.
Next year, the league plans to add two new expansion teams in Baltimore, Maryland and Nashville Tennessee. While UPSHOT is not affiliated with the WNBA and not quite the G League, the fact that it runs concurrent to the WNBA regular season makes it a prime player pool for potential roster spots.

In the case of Onyiah, she had appeared in 21 games with the Charlotte Crown this season, averaging 9.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots. She was invited to training camp with the New York Liberty, but was one of the team’s final roster cuts before the start of the season. She played five seasons at Cal while going undrafted in the 2025 WNBA Draft.

Onyiah joins Bree Hall as the Fever’s two allocated developmental contract spots on the roster, and they are limited in the number of games they can be activated for.
