Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has found herself in the headlines for anything but her play on the floor over the past two weeks.
This comes after Cunningham shared her stance that biological men should not compete in girls’ or women’s sports. Since thrusting herself into the transgender athlete debate, she has become a talking point in the political realm on a seemingly daily basis.

Cunningham appeared on USA Network Wednesday to weigh in on the latest developments in the transgender athlete controversy surrounding the WNBA.
“I know that people are not always going to align and agree; I totally understand that,” Cunningham said. “But I think the most important thing is having that respect, having that love, and pursuing peace in these conversations, in these debates, because I think that is healthy.”
As mentioned, Cunningham has become the face of the transgender athlete discussion to the point where WNBA players are being talked about on national news programs over their stance on the complex topic.

Even Fever superstar Caitlin Clark was called out by some national talking heads for not taking a clear stance on the political and societal issue during a postgame press conference.
“Now, with that being said, I just hate how the W, the basketball of it all, is just getting overshadowed,” Cunningham continued. “I think you are seeing teams playing at the highest level they’ve ever played at. You see great basketball, the most elite-level basketball this league has ever seen. And it just makes me sad that all this kind of drama and things that truly don’t matter — the basketball is getting overshadowed.”
These comments do attempt to push the focus back to basketball. Yet Cunningham’s detractors will note that she was the one who brought up this conversation in the first place.

The debate stretches well beyond the borders of the WNBA. Still, it has become the key issue players are being asked about by the media before, during, and after games.
Cunningham wants the focus to return to the actual basketball being played on the court. However, at this point, it’s impossible to magically erase this conversation from everyone’s memory now that it has been brought up and discussed in so much detail.
Fever fans are hoping this does not distract Indiana from its 2026 title chase.
