Sophie Cunningham‘s belief that transgender athletes should not compete in women’s sports has sparked a debate that has reached Capitol Hill and even the White House. As the controversy surrounding her comments continues to grow, the Indiana Fever guard said Wednesday that she wants the focus to return to basketball.
Instead, Cunningham’s remarks prompted another flurry of strong reactions, further fueling one of the most divisive conversations surrounding the WNBA.

Weeks after the Fever guard said women should be protected from competing against “biological men,” the controversy has only intensified. Politicians, media personalities, celebrities, and fans have all joined the conversation, turning Cunningham into one of the most polarizing figures in women’s basketball.
On Wednesday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance publicly backed Cunningham, urging her to “keep going” despite enduring criticism from what he called “some of the worst people in the world.”
Later that same day, Cunningham told reporters that the WNBA media “cover everything except basketball,” a remark that immediately triggered another wave of backlash across social media.

Many critics argued that Cunningham herself shifted the conversation away from basketball when she first discussed the issue with ESPN.
“The actual COWARD is now trying to run from the drama SHE started. Nah. [Expletive] that. Sophie Cunningham opened her mouth to take attention away from the ‘main thing’ and put it on herself. So now she has to deal with the fallout and having it follow her wherever she goes. She doesn’t get to decide when the conversation is over,” TV critic John Rocha wrote.

“Respect Trans people by not bringing them up to score political points. There are ZERO trans women in the NCAA or WNBA … it’s a non-issue,” a Chicago sports fan chimed in.
“She stepped into a pile of [expletive], and now she can’t scrape it off. She’s forced her team and the W to address a non-issue. And while she’s used to being in the bad girl spotlight, I don’t think she’s clever enough to handle this. To be clear: LGBTQ issues are important. She is not,” a WNBA observer blasted Cunningham.

When Cunningham refused to buckle under pressure last month, she insisted her position was not politically motivated. Instead, she described it as “common sense,” maintaining that women should not have to compete against naturally born males.
Her remarks quickly blew past basketball boundaries.
About a week after the interview, demonstrations from both supporters and critics began following the Fever from city to city.
Those protests became increasingly visible during Indiana’s recent road games in Portland and Minnesota, where demonstrators from both sides gathered outside the arenas.

The debate appears far from over.
Another protest is already planned for the Fever’s visit to Chicago on Saturday, with one more expected when Indiana travels to face the New York Liberty on Aug. 22.
Both Chicago and New York allow transgender athletes to compete in accordance with local policies, making those games likely flashpoints as Cunningham’s comments continue to fuel one of the most closely watched conversations in the WNBA and beyond.
