Kansas Emerges as Contender for Michigan State Transfer Jaxon Kohler
The Kansas men’s basketball program could be in position to make another late offseason addition as Bill Self continues to explore options for the Jayhawks’ final roster spot.

Kansas has been linked to former Michigan State forward Jaxon Kohler after the recent NCAA eligibility ruling granted additional eligibility to many members of the 2022 recruiting class. According to CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Kohler is considering Kansas, BYU and a return to Michigan State if he decides to continue his collegiate career.
The development comes after Self acknowledged last week that Kansas is still evaluating potential additions.
“Our roster’s not set,” Self said. “It may be over, but we’re still investigating different opportunities.”
Kohler would immediately become one of the most accomplished available players. The 6-foot-9 forward is coming off the best season of his college career, averaging 12.5 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists while helping Michigan State post a 27-8 record. He also developed into a reliable perimeter shooter, connecting on nearly 39% of his 3-point attempts.

Kansas has prioritized adding frontcourt depth throughout the offseason, particularly after Christian Reeves underwent shoulder surgery and with Serbian center Mihailo Mušikić still awaiting NCAA eligibility clearance. Kohler’s ability to play both inside and stretch the floor would provide additional versatility alongside transfers Keanu Dawes and Paul Mbiya.
The Jayhawks’ pursuit of Kohler is part of a broader effort to strengthen a roster that features significant turnover from last season. Kansas added several transfers during the offseason, including Dawes, Dennis Parker Jr., Leroy Blyden Jr. and Reeves, while bringing in one of the nation’s top freshman classes led by Tyran Stokes.
Several roster questions remain unresolved entering August. Mušikić’s eligibility status has yet to be finalized, while former Kansas guard Melvin Council Jr. continues pursuing another year of eligibility through the courts.
If Kohler officially enters the transfer portal, Kansas is expected to be among the schools to watch. His experience, rebounding ability and offensive versatility could make him one of the most impactful late additions available before the 2026-27 season.
