Islam Makhachev’s dominance stems from his suffocating wrestling and relentless pressure a blueprint he’s used to dismantle elite competition, including former welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena. After filling out his welterweight frame, Makhachev’s 56% takedown accuracy and 3.1 takedowns per 15 minutes make him a nightmare matchup for strikers like Garry.
In addition, Makhachev’s striking has proven to be a useful tool, not just a visual flash that sets up his takedowns. In his welterweight title fight, he chopped Della Maddalena’s calf with low kicks that eventually allowed him to take down the former champion with ease.

Garry, however, presents unique challenges. The Irishman’s only career loss came via decision to Shavkat Rakhmonov in December 2024.
Still, he’s rebounded with wins over one of the most dangerous strikers in the welterweight division, Carlos Prates, and the former welterweight champion, Belal Muhammad.
At 28, Garry possesses exceptional distance management and a 54% strike accuracy, often neutralizing wrestlers with his footwork, front kicks, and jabs. His 80% takedown defense will be critical against Makhachev’s chain wrestling.

In his fight against Muhammad, Garry also showcased his knowledge of how to deal with calf kicks by using quick turning checks and hollowing out his leg, causing the kick to whiff.
