After 15 years and more than two dozen individual accolades, Nneka Ogwumike is stepping away from the WNBA.

The Sparks star announced her intention to retire following the conclusion of the season in an interview with Boardroom’s Taylor Rooks. Ogwumike, the No. 1 pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft, has quietly amassed an impressive collection of hardware, including the 2015 MVP.

The 36-year-old has enjoyed another wondrous campaign in 2026, collecting her 11th All-Star appearance while leading Los Angeles in points and rebounds. A hulking contract appeared to beckon for her following the season. Instead, she’s hanging up her sneakers, prepared to transition into one of the eternals who lingers around the floor as the next generation takes the sport to new heights.

Why is former WNBA MVP Nneka Ogwumike retiring?

Ogwumike remains one of the best players in the league in her 15th season, tallying 17 points and nine rebounds for the Sparks. Her retirement came as a bit of a surprise given her impressive production.

The 11-time All-Star explained that, although her body does feel the effects of her lengthy career, the main reason why she feels compelled to walk away from the sport is satisfaction with her career resume.

“I still feel very good,” Ogwumike said. “But I also feel the comfort of slowing down a little bit. I just feel content, I feel very content with where I’ve left my career. With 15 years under my belt, I feel very content about what we were able to achieve coming into this season.”
