Sophie Cunningham kick-started the debate around whether or not transgender athletes should be able to compete in the WNBA.

Royce White and Enes Kanter have since declared for the 2027 WNBA draft, though it remains to be seen if the league would allow them to be drafted.

Payton McNabb agrees biological women in the WNBA need protection

McNabb is an ambassador for the Independent Women forum, and was previously injured by a male on the women’s volleyball court.

Her bio page on the IW website explains: “McNabb is a former North Carolina high school volleyball player (and three sport athlete) who was severely injured by a male on the women’s volleyball court. She has joined Independent Women to share her personal experience of competing against a biological male athlete, how her life forever changed following an injury during the game, and her desire to speak out to keep women’s sports female.”

Now, McNabb has been speaking to NEWSMAX about transgender athletes competing in the WNBA.

She was asked: “Do you think that it is time for new leadership to actually protect biological women in the WNBA?”

McNabb responded: “Absolutely. What we’ve seen from this league has just been a complete joke. They have proven time and time again just how unserious they are.

“I think what she said, what Sophie [Cunningham] said is completely true.”

The WNBA had a task force meeting earlier this month that involved discussing trans athletes.

In the statement put out afterwards, they said, ‘There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA, and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others’.
