A current Notre Dame commit visited another program over the weekend. Is there anything to worry about for the Fighting Irish?
The official visit season kicked off over the weekend, with schools from all across college football hosting some of the top 2027 recruits. Notre Dame football won’t begin its official visit events until next week, but that didn’t stop a current Fighting Irish commit from visiting another campus.

It was reported by Jason Killop, a Michigan State staff writer for On3, that 2027 Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy linebacker Amarri Irvin had spent the weekend visiting the Spartans. The Michigan State program is one close to the family’s heart, with his father, Sedrick Irvin, who was a star running back for the team in the 1990s. Irvin has been committed to head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish since November, so seeing him on campus in East Lansing wasn’t the most comforting thing in the world.

Based upon a couple of conversations I have had tonight, I am not overly concerned with Irvin leaving the class right now. Anytime a recruit is visiting other schools, however, it is worth keeping a close eye on. Linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary keeping Irvin in the class is a top priority for the Irish staff.
If Notre Dame can keep Irvin in the class, all eyes are on five-star Kaden Henderson and Chicago native Roman Igwebuike. The program needs at least one more linebacker to put together a solid class, but would ideally like to add both, even if it is a bit of a long shot right now.
Amarri Irvin’s background and recruitment
If the last name sounds familiar, he is the younger brother of Sedrick Irvin Jr., who was once committed to the Irish back in the 2023 recruiting class. Notre Dame opted to move on from Irvin at the time, and he now plays for Stanford. His father was a standout running back with Michigan State in the 1990s.

The younger Irvin is a talented player in his own right. He is considered a four-star player by multiple major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Irvin sits as the No. 286 overall player, the No. 23 linebacker, and the No. 26 player in the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class.
The 6-0, 220-pound defender has been pursued by a long list of extremely impressive programs. Some of Irvin’s top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Oregon, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Penn State, Florida State, Nebraska, Kentucky, Kansas State, Pittsburgh, SMU, Louisville, Michigan State, Colorado, UNC, Arkansas, Stanford, and Duke, among others.
As a junior, Irvin solidified himself as an important member of the IMG Academy defense. In nine games, he finished fourth on the team with 36 total tackles. Irvin has also recorded six tackles for loss, four sacks, 13 quarterback hurries, three interceptions, and another pass breakup. The versatility that he brings is impressive.
