Dan Hurley has never been shy about expressing his opinion, and the UConn men’s basketball coach needed only one sentence to summarize his feelings about the latest development threatening to reshape college sports.

U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney issued a preliminary injunction Friday that allows members of the high school class of 2022 who have completed four seasons of college competition to remain eligible for the 2026-27 season. The decision could give affected players a fifth season and immediately create more uncertainty for coaches attempting to finalize their rosters.
Hurley responded with an exasperated plea on social media.
“Somebody please come and fix College Sports,” Hurley wrote on X. “It’s a complete [expletive]show.”
Why the eligibility ruling matters
The injunction centers on athletes who began their college careers after the NCAA’s COVID-era eligibility relief had already been established but have now exhausted four seasons of competition.
Sweeney determined that the players challenging the NCAA’s eligibility rules could suffer irreparable harm if they were not permitted to compete while the case continues.

The NCAA strongly disagrees with the decision. President Charlie Baker has repeatedly argued that expanded eligibility could allow older or former professional players to use college sports as a fallback option. The ruling also creates an immediate roster-management problem across college basketball. Coaches have already built teams around scholarship limits, transfer additions and incoming recruiting classes. If more experienced players are suddenly allowed to return, programs could be forced to make difficult decisions only months before the season begins.
Hurley’s frustration likely reflects the concerns of many coaches, even if they have not expressed them as colorfully.

Several college basketball players already granted fifth season
The latest injunction is part of a growing wave of legal challenges against NCAA eligibility restrictions. According to The Associated Press, 19 athletes have already been granted a fifth season of eligibility through a separate order. That group includes Vanderbilt basketball player Jalen Washington and Ole Miss guard AJ Storr.

I’Ashea Myles of the Davidson County Chancery Court ordered the NCAA to recognize the plaintiffs as eligible for the 2026-27 basketball season and prohibited the organization from interfering with their recruitment, transfers or certification based on the challenged eligibility determination.
Those decisions could encourage additional athletes to pursue similar legal action, potentially expanding the number of players seeking another season.
The NCAA is expected to challenge the rulings as it attempts to maintain control over its eligibility framework. In the meantime, coaches such as Hurley are left preparing for a season in which the available player pool and roster rules could continue changing. Hurley has built UConn into one of college basketball’s premier programs by thriving in a demanding environment. Even he appears exhausted by the constant legal, financial and roster uncertainty now defining the sport.
