Kentucky basketball is now on Mark Mitchell watch

by

Coach Mark Pope and the Kentucky basketball team are officially on Mark Mitchell watch this weekend.

This has been one of the craziest offseasons in college sports history. The NCAA changed eligibility rules, but excluded the class of 2022, which has led to multiple challenges in court which have been won by the players. Most recently, a Kentucky court ruled in favor of several athletes, including former Missouri Tigers star Mark Mitchell, who immediately entered the transfer portal with a “do not contact” tag per Pete Nakos of On3.

With the successful court ruling, Mitchell is not only approved to play another season, but is able to enter the transfer portal. Enter the Wildcats.

As the players began to win their cases, Pope and the Wildcats began to look at who might be available, and Mitchell’s name came up pretty early. With Missouri last season, he averaged 18.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting 38% from three-point range.

Reports say that Mitchell could decide as early as this weekend, though there is no confirmed timetable. Many view the Wildcats as the favorite, though. His ability to play multiple positions would bring lineup flexibility, and his experience would be a huge benefit.

For now, Kentucky is waiting to see how it plays out. It should be noted that the NCAA is likely to appeal the Kentucky ruling as well, so there are a lot of variables still to play out. We will keep fans updated.
