ESPN analyst facing investigation during crash, amputation recovery announces leave

ESPN NFL draft analyst Matt Miller is stepping away from his role indefinitely after being injured in a serious car accident.

Miller announced in a social media post he would “be placed on leave from ESPN” as he focuses on his recovery from the injuries, which included an amputation of his left arm after the accident.

“The surgery to remove my left arm was successful with hopes of an eventual prosthetic replacement,” Miller wrote on X. “Similarly, the femur and patella surgeries were also successful and the fantastic surgery team was able to save my left leg.”

“To best focus on my healing and recovery, I’m stepping away indefinitely and will be placed on leave from ESPN,” he continued. “Thank you to all for the prayers and thoughts; please keep them coming.”

Matt Miller investigation

Miller’s post was his first since allegations of past financial improprieties were levied against him by multiple people, both on social media and via reporting by Awful Announcing. Several individuals outlined they had failed to receive payments for fantasy football leagues, football camps and scouting lessons in which Miller has been involved.

A spokesperson for the Missouri attorney general’s office confirmed to USA TODAY on July 2 that it was investigating Miller. The attorney general’s office could not disclose the details of the investigation due to its active nature. However, it did imply the case was related to consumer protection.

“The Missouri Attorney General’s Office encourages consumers who believe they have been misled to contact us,” the office said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. “Attorney General Hanaway takes consumer protection very seriously, and we will work diligently to uncover the facts.”

Miller did not address that investigation, or the allegations against him, in his social media post. A GoFundMe for his benefit – which was set up by family members and generated $51,147 of a $55,000 goal – has remained paused since July 3.

ESPN, which has employed Miller as a full-time draft analyst since 2022, has yet to comment on the situation.
