“He’d Be Like Me”: Shane van Gisbergen Tips Broc Feeney to Shine in NASCAR

Shane van Gisbergen’s former teammate from the Supercars championship, Broc Feeney, was trackside at the Sonoma Raceway last weekend for the NASCAR races. SVG recently spoke highly of Fenney, expecting the Australian to do well in the American stock car championship.

SVG made the move from the V8 Supercars championship to NASCAR and has established himself as arguably the best road course driver in the series at the moment. The Kiwi won last weekend’s Cup and O’Reilly race at Sonoma, and equalled Tony Stewart’s road course win record.

In the latest episode of theDale Jr. Download podcast, Shane van Gisbergen was asked about Broc Feeney being trackside at Sonoma and his potential in NASCAR. SVG hailed his former teammate and expected him to do well in NASCAR.

“He [Broc Feeney] was trying to get in with some teams there. I think he tried for Watkins Glen and Sonoma, he really wants to have a crack. I’m sure he’d be like me. Maybe he’d want to have a go on the ovals after, but it’d be really interesting to see how he’d go,” said Shane van Gisbergen.

Ford hasn’t won a road course race in the Cup series in two years, with their last win coming with Chris Buescher at Watkins Glen in September 2024. SVG suggested that Broc Feeney could boost Ford’s chances at a win.

“I think Ford struggled a little bit on the road courses, so it’d be good to get someone good in that car. Not that the others aren’t good, but it’d be really good to see what Broc could do and how much he could do in the future too,” added Shane van Gisbergen.

Broc Feeney drives for Red Bull Ampol Racing in the Supercars Championship, which transitioned from running Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 last year to the Ford Mustang S650 in 2026. Feeney finished in the Top 3 of the Supercars championship for the last three seasons and is the current championship leader.

Coming into the Sonoma Raceway weekend, Shane van Gisbergen sat just outside the Top 16 required to make the Chase. After a heartbreaking weekend in San Diego where SVG crashed out of the race when he was the favorite to win, a strong result was necessary at Sonoma.

The No. 97 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet driver won at Sonoma and jumped to P14 in the standings. Highlighting his aim of scoring points in the upcoming rounds to make the Chase, Shane van Gisbergen, speaking with Sirius XM, said,

“Every week we’re looking at the points. Our gap to the cut line, projected points we need and all that kind of stuff. The engineering side of things get a bit deep into it. I just need to execute. I need to go do the best I can on the ovals and stop making little mistakes.”

SVG’s strength has been the road courses. With only ovals remaining on the calendar for the regular season and the Kiwi driver not having enough of a points gap to the cutline, scoring points in the upcoming oval races is the only way to ensure a spot in the Chase.
