Kevin O’Leary recently gave his own unique take on all the controversies surrounding the WNBA. The WNBA has been enjoying a bit too much popularity, especially after all the drama surrounding issues both inside and outside the court.
As everything else, Mr. Wonderful could not help but take note of this in a more business-like fashion. Leary was asked if he would be ready to invest in the WNBA, and the entrepreneur replied in the affirmative. In fact, Leary even went on to credit the league for churning up so much attention and bringing themselves so many new customers.
“I’m bullish on the WNBA. The league has done an incredible job building attention through media, social media, and emerging stars who are creating real fan loyalty. Controversy has only added fuel to that interest, but the bigger story is the growth of the product itself. As these players become bigger stars, the value of the league… will continue to rise.” Kevin O’ Leary responded.

Kevin O’ Leary’s words do hold plenty of truth, with the league seeing exponential growth in the last couple of years all thanks to new powerhouses of talent entering their careers, namely Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Paige Bueckers and rookie Olivia Miles. All these women have got a lot of attention for the things they do both on and off the court, which has benefited the WNBA immensely.

Meanwhile, Kevin O’Leary’s thoughts on the WNBA being investment-worthy did not get the positive reaction he expected. The comments of his post saw plenty of fans voicing their opinions, that the league is bound to fail because of the same controversies he feels they are profiting right now.

More than the on-court issues, it is the other issues that have got the brunt of the fans’ attention, especially the ongoing trans-athlete debate. The debate was essentially kicked off by Sophie Cunningham after she made anti-trans remarks during an interview with ESPN earlier.

Since then, the WNBA has been getting a lot of pressure to come out with a clarification on their gender policy. Cathy Engelbert and the task-force she appointed for this very issue have failed to arrive at a solution so far, which has led many ardent fans to believe that the league has reached a point of no return.
