LeBron James is entering another crucial offseason with the Los Angeles Lakers, and the next contract offer could shape the franchise’s direction around him, Luka Doncic and the rest of the roster.

According to Brian Windhorst’s report on The Hoop Collective podcast (h/t Bleacher Report), James and his camp want the Lakers to make a contract offer, but if that offer comes in below the maximum, they want the team to explain why and how the saved money would be used.

That detail adds a clear layer to the Lakers’ summer plans. James, 41, becomes an unrestricted free agent when his two-year, $101 million deal expires, and his next move will likely be measured against both his market value and the team’s willingness to keep building around him.

The situation matters because James remained productive in 2025-26. He played 60 games, all starts, and averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 51.5 percent from the field and 31.7 percent from three-point range.

Those numbers show that the Lakers are still dealing with a high-level creator, even in the later stages of his career. When James is healthy, he remains one of the team’s primary connectors, helping Luka Doncic carry the offensive load while also giving the Lakers another playmaker who can organize late-game possessions.

The financial question, though, is bigger than one season. If Los Angeles asks James to accept less than the maximum, the expectation from his camp is that the Lakers will present a basketball reason for the discount, not just a cap-sheet answer.

That puts pressure on the front office to show a real plan for the money. Any pay cut would have to help the Lakers pursue players who can improve the roster immediately, especially after a season in which the team finished 53-29 and secured a playoff berth but still fell short of a championship.

James has already been linked with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors, while a return to the Lakers also remains in play. That keeps multiple outcomes alive, but the Lakers remain the most direct storyline because they control the environment around his next contract decision.
