The Mavericks used the No. 9 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft to select Michigan forward Morez Johnson, reuniting him with former Wolverines head coach Dusty May, who was officially hired by Dallas earlier in the day.

Johnson elevated his draft stock during a successful sophomore season at Michigan, averaging 13.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks while helping lead the Wolverines to a national championship.

He earned All-Big Ten Second Team and All-Defensive Team honors and emerged as one of the top frontcourt prospects in the class.

The 6-foot-9 forward is known for his toughness, athleticism, defensive versatility, and winning mentality.

While his offensive game is still developing, scouts view him as a player capable of making an immediate impact through his energy, rebounding, and defense.

Johnson also impressed teams during the pre-draft process with his physical measurements and overall athletic profile, helping secure his place in the lottery.

Dallas views him as a strong addition to its young core and a potential long-term frontcourt partner for Cooper Flagg.

With the Mavericks dealing with injuries and roster turnover among their big men last season, Johnson provides another physical presence and defensive option in the pain
