While UFC 330 is still weeks away, MMA fans are buzzing because welterweight contender Michael Morales has been active on social media lately.
On Instagram, Morales posted training pictures and teased a possible fight, including a date. On Monday, Morales captioned his post, “A ROMPER HP 15-08-26.”

The date is significant. That’s when UFC 330 takes place, where the welterweight title will be fought between champion Islam Makhachev and rising star Ian Machado Garry.

What got fans even more hyped was a response to a fan’s comment. One fan commented, “Fight Booked?” and Morales simply responded, “Yes,” seemingly confirming a massive addition to UFC 330.
Potential opponents were even rumored, but one MMA reporter says the rumors might not have much staying power.

Rumors included two possible opponents. The first is Yaroslav Amosov, a top-15 welterweight who thrives in the grappling department and is a slick submission artist.
The other rumored opponent was Carlos Prates. A fellow top contender at welterweight who has just as much of a case for the next title shot as Morales does. This fight is one of the most anticipated non-title matchups in the sport.

Despite Morales himself stirring up news on social media, UFC fans will have to lower their expectations. MMA Junkie’s Nolan King reported that Morales doesn’t actually have a fight booked.

Furthermore, multiple sources have confirmed that Morales is actually the backup for the title fight between Makhachev and Machado Garry.

Who Michael Morales should fight next

There’s one name that makes the most sense, and that’s Prates. Prates is riding a three-fight win streak, all by TKO. Beating former champions like Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena, Prates has run out of contenders to fight.

The same can be said for Morales, who’s undefeated at 19-0 and just beat the then No. 1-ranked contender in Sean Brady. This is a dream striking matchup that is guaranteed fireworks.
The other side of this matchup is that MMA fans want Morales to stay active. Islam Makhachev fights roughly once a year right now, which means that the next title fight is in April or June.
That’ll mean one of these fighters will go over a year without fighting, which no one wants to see. Morales and Prates should fight at New York’s Madison Square Garden on the UFC’s November numbered card.
