Good morning Gang Green Nation! Sometimes you just have to chuckle at the absurd level of hype training camp provides. If you scroll down to the last link in today’s Flight Connections you come to an article titled “Brandon Stephens is quickly giving Jets fans a reason to forget about Sauce Gardner.” Ummm … what?! Brandon Stephens is a 28 year old journeyman who probably shouldn’t be starting in the NFL. For his career Stephens has allowed a 105+ passer rating in coverage. No quarterback in the history of the NFL has a 105+ career passer rating. Which means throwing at Stephens essentially turns the average NFL quarterback into the best quarterback of all time. Last year Stephens allowed an ungodly 134+ passer rating, the worst of his NFL career, so it’s not like he’s on the upswing in his career.
Sauce Gardner is a two time All Pro. He has allowed a passer rating of 76.7 for his career. Last season the 32nd ranked NFL passer was Joe Flacco, with a 79.2 passer rating. Throwing at Gardner essentially turns the average NFL starting quarterback into worse than the worst starting quarterback in the NFL. So here’s what we have. Throw at Stephens, get results better than the best QB in NFL history. Throw at Sauce, get results worse than the worst starting quarterback in the NFL. But sure, a few decent Stephens practices in August no doubt will make Jets fans forget about their former two time All Pro cornerback. Makes perfect sense when you really think about it.

The irony here is that even the author of that article doesn’t believe his own headline. Read past the headline and you see he doesn’t even try to make the case his headline implies. He knows better than that. He just wanted to put up a clickbait headline full of absurd hype, because clicks are apparently more important than not misleading your audience. Sigh.
