Nobody was shocked when they scrolled down and saw Ohio State star receiver Jeremiah Smith included on the Fred Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list when it was announced on Wednesday. After all, he probably should have won the award his first two seasons and was significantly snubbed last year when USC’s Makai Lemon took home the prize.
Smith was voted on his freshman year in 2024, but never made it as far as a finalist, likely because of voters’ hesitation to award a freshman. Last season, however, Smith was one of the three finalists but somehow lost out (ahem – this writer voted for him).

We don’t have to rehash all of Smith’s accomplishments or how he can leap tall buildings and catch footballs with his teeth because everyone knows how good he is. However, what we will say is that Smith has the most receiving yards (2,558) and touchdown catches (27) of any receiver in college over the last two years, and that’s with all of the double-teaming and bracketed coverage he receives. And while missing a little time because of injury and some blowouts.
Smith has been recognized on almost every preseason accolade he can, including All-American teams and other preseason watch lists, and this just adds to all of the honors.
As far as the Biletnikoff goes, Ohio State has had just modest success with its wide receivers winning the award. Only Terry Glenn (1995) and Marvin Harrison Jr. (2023) have won while wearing the scarlet and gray. We’ll find out if Smith can become the third when the award is announced on ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 11. There has to be a very good shot he is honored, should he stay healthy.
