Arkansas basketball has a lot of hugely important players. On a roster with eight freshmen, nearly everyone has to step up. The Hogs will absolutely require at least five or six of those freshmen to have good if not great seasons. That’s the reality of having a young team with the average age of a teenager.
Jordan Smith has to be a dude. So must JJ Andrews. Caleb Ourigou needs to be a beast inside. All of those players are very important. That having been said, those three players look the part of stars if not superstars. They all seem much more likely to thrive than not. Their success in 2027 doesn’t feel uncertain.

It’s Miikka Muurinen whose reality – and path to stardom – can’t be evaluated with the same absolute confidence. Yes, part of this is because he didn’t play in The Bahamas in early August due to eligibility issues, but that’s not the whole story. College basketball insiders who followed Muurinen’s recruitment at Arkansas know that his mother, who played international basketball herself, sought out John Calipari to be the coach who could give discipline and structure to her son, who is universally acknowledged as a talented player but also a difficult-to-manage personality. Mama Muurinen wanted Calipari to straighten out her son and improve his work habits. If you think about that piece of context, Muurinen might be the pivotal figure on this Arkansas team. Smith, Andrews, Ourigou – they don’t have problems being coachable. Muurinen has to show he is coachable for Arkansas to reach its ceiling.
Sports Illustrated noted Muurinen’s importance purely in terms of Arkansas’ need for frontcourt production:
“While Muurinen is awaiting confirmation of his collegiate eligibility, he continues to put in the work in the gym to stay ready when his number is called. Unfortunately, he wasn’t permitted to play in a single exhibition in the Bahamas, but has shown during multiple all-star settings this offseason that he is more than ready to contribute in a big way. Getting things right in March matters more than anything, but showing a semblance of an effective inside game on both ends of the floor in November can only help raise the Razorbacks‘ ceiling.”
If John Calipari gets through to Miikka Muurinen, the Hogs get his offense but also a strong work ethic on defense and will have more flexibility with their lineups, since Ourigou is a rock-solid defender and rebounder who should thrive at the defensive end of the floor. If Muurinen develops sound habits alongside the Hogs’ hungry backcourt, the odds of UA having a truly complete roster with no real holes will soar. Muurinen, not anyone else, feels like the true X-factor on the 2026-2027 Razorbacks.
