Oregon State men’s basketball added a new piece to their frontcourt this week, and we need to talk about his name.
Peteris Pinnis.
Peteris. Pinnis.
This is a WVU sports blog. We don’t have a dog in this fight, but when the sports gods drop something this pure in our laps, we have a responsibility to stand up and acknowledge it.

So let’s do this properly.
Pinnis is a 7-foot, 260-pound forward transferring from Providence, where he appeared in 18 games last season, averaging 4.2 minutes per game. In that limited action, he put up 0.8 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. Modest numbers, but the man was barely getting four minutes. You can’t judge what a Pinnis can do with four minutes. Nobody can. That’s not enough time to really get going.
What Oregon State is betting on is that Pinnis grows into a bigger role. At 7-foot and 260 pounds, he has the kind of length and girth that changes what a defense has to account for. Get him in the right system, give him real minutes, and let him fully extend, and you might be looking at something genuinely useful in the paint.
Will he rise to the occasion with real playing time? Can he penetrate a defense? Does he explode at the rim? Does he have the stamina to go the distance in a 40-minute Pac-12 game?

I don’t know, but we’re rooting for him. Good luck, Peteris Pinnis. Stand tall.
